Greetings from the jungle!
Man what a busy few weeks it has been here in Honduras. Two weeks ago we had a team from Lee University travel down to host medical brigades and school visits for two weeks. Lee University brought a dentist, optometrist, and a medical doctor along with 11 students to run these brigades. Each day we would pack up our medicines and supplies into totes and carry them to the villages for a total of 11 medical brigades and 2 school visits.
What does our medical brigade look like? Well, we get up around 5:30 am, eat breakfast, pack up everything we need into 5 or 6 totes and we all load up into a cattle trailer for the ride up the mountain. Once we get to our destination, we hop off the truck and then hike the rest of the way into the village. Some days our hike was 10 minutes, other days it was longer than an hour. As we arrived, the patients are already lined up to see the doctor. A typical patient day would be around 75 to 100 people. Once we finish seeing all of the patients, we pack up, load the cattle trailer and head back to our Jungle Hospital campus.
On Wednesday, we hosted a school visit in our own village of Rio Viejo. We try to go to each school twice per year to teach them healthy eating, how to brush your teeth, wash your hands and also share with them about Jesus. Here in Honduras, they don't do education on what you can do to prevent sickness. So our goal is to teach them while they are young so that we can decrease the prevalence of disease. After our usual education activities, we had an art project for them. We put together bracelets with 7 beads each representing Jesus and how he died on the cross for us. We were able to bless 801 patients and 197 students during these two weeks. God is so good!
Even though we had two busy weeks, we were able to throw a little fun in. On Sunday, we spent our afternoon hiking to the local waterfall. It's such a beautiful hike through the jungle!
We are so blessed by the teams that are able to come down and help. Our next team will be coming July 6th. Please keep us in your prayers as we continue on in this season of hosting teams.
